Abstract

1,184,611. Stranding machines. A. A. BIAGINI. 6 March, 1967 [4 March, 1966; 30 Jan., 1967], No. 10499/67. Heading D1T. In an apparatus for twisting advancing wires, strands, ropes or the like 80 by pulling the wires through a die 70 and then twisting the wires together, there are twist limiting means 88A, about which each wire is individually and at least partially wrapped, positioned at a point intermediate the die 70 and the wire supply to terminate twisting of the wires at that point. The means 88A may comprises spools rotatable on upstanding posts, the wires 80 being wrapped around said spools. In Fig. 2A a core wire 24 is drawn from a reel 26 mounted in a rotating holder 28 via a slip coupling 58. When the wires 80 have passed the twist limiting means 88A they are spaced around the core wire 24 by fixed guide plates 66, 68 and then passed through the die 70. The guide plate 66 is adjustable longitudinally of the machine. Second and third layers of wires may be applied by rotating members 136, 136A carrying supply bobbins 138, 138A mounted on slip couplings. In Fig. 2B the resulting strand passes between a first set of rollers 162A that cause the strand to follow a zig-zag path in a first plane, and then between a second set of rollers at 162B that cause the strand to follow a zig-zag path in a second plane normal to said first plane, the flexing of the strand causing it to become unstressed. A capstan 30 pulls the strand through the machine and has adjustable gears to permit variable pulling ratios. The rotating cage 246 carries traverse means 254 and a take-up drum 244.
