881,906. Making cables. GEOFFROY-DELORE S.A. March 24, 1958 [March 26, 1957], No. 9336/58. Class 109. Cables constituted of several layers or strands are made by twisting all the layers at the same time and in the same direction and cyclically varying the pitch of every alternate layer. Wire strands 1 from a creel 2 pass through lay-plates 3, 4 and a die 22, which may be traversed by a grooved drum 23 to vary the pitch of one or more lays, to a rotary frame 9 that twists the strands together. After passing over a haul pulley assembly 15 rotating with the frame 9, the twisted strands go through a hollow shaft 7 and over guides which direct them through the axis of a takeup sheave 13 and over a haul pulley assembly 12 held stationary by its own weight or by gearing and applying a force not less than and preferably 2% greater than that applied by the assembly 15 to the strands which are then traversed by mechanism 14 on to the sheave 13. The strands on the sheave are next fed back through the assembly 12, frame 9 and assembly 15, now rotated in the opposite sense by means of a reverser clutch 19, and coiled into a container 21. The guide and haul pulleys are preferably formed with grooves corresponding to the size of the cable and made interchangeable for the accommodation of different sizes of cable.
