Abstract

1,269,526. Rope-making machines. GENERAL CABLE CORP. 20 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968], No. 25698/69. Heading D1T. Cable 4 is twisted before passing to a rotating take-up cradle and reel 7 by a twisting unit 12, two of which are shown in Fig. 1, each mounted for rotation about the cable axis and including a flexible endless rope 17 wound helically round the cable in frictional engagement therewith and a braked sheave 22 resisting movement of the rope. As the cable 4 is drawn towards the take-up cradle 7, the rope 17 exerts a twisting force thereon. To provide a substantially uniform twist along the cable 4, a photocell unit detects variations from the required lay by changes in position of a line printed on the cable by a wheel 49, the output from the photocell unit being used to control a magnetic clutch braking the sheave 22, and thus to control the twisting force. The rope 17 is stated to produce a substantially circular cross-sectional configuration of the cable 4. A spring-mounted sheave 24 takes up slack produced in the rope 17 by variations in the cross-section of cable 4. One, two or four twisting units 12 may be used, and each may carry more than one rope 17.
