811,703. Making electric cables. SHARDLOW ELECTRIC WIRES Ltd., and HARGREAVES, F. G. July, 12 1955 [July 12, 1954], No. 20371/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] An electric conductor C is embedded in insulant, e.g. polythene, by an extrusion process, and as the insulant is being extruded through the die, axial cavities are formed in the insula n t by air, which is fed under pressure to the die head. A braided or other conductor may subsequently be applied as a sheath around the insulant, to form a coaxial cable. There may be a plurality of conductors C. Fig. 2 shows conductor-coating extrusion apparatus that includes a chamber 16 to which compressed air is fed and from which the air passes through ducts 17 into the insulant. The ducts 17 are arranged in a non-rotatable inner die member I which is also provided with radial slots 15. Plastic insulant is forced along an annular passage 14 and also through slots 15 into a central cavity 20 through which the cable C passes. The forcing mechanism, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises a tapered screw arranged with its axis perpendicular to the direction of extrusion.
