Abstract
970,037. Electric cables. PIRELLI S.p.A. Sept. 9, 1963 [Feb. 25, 1963], No. 35441/63. Heading H1A. A fluid impregnated, high tension, electric cable consisting of a stranded core 1 insulated by two or more tappings of synthetic plastics material comprises granules which are sandwiched between each pair of the tapings and which allow penetration of the impregnating fluid between the tapings without affecting the dielectric properties of the insulation. The granules which are preferably between 1 and 10 microns in size are applied to the tapings before or after their application to the cable core by electro-static attraction techniques, or by dispersing them in liquid adhesive which is then applied to the tape's surface, or by spraying them on in an air jet as the tapes are helically wound into position. The granules may be of inorganic materials such as mica, talc or silica or may be of organic materials such as cellulose, carboxy methyl cellulose or polyvinyl acetals. Materials suitable for making the plastics tapings are polypropylene, polyethylene, polytetrafluorethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polybutylene, polystyrene or a polycarbonate. A screening tape may be included between the core and the tapings. Specifications 675,224, 854,797 and 934,911 are referred to.
