Abstract
692,480. Cables. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Jan. 3, 1950 [April 9, 1949], No. 140/50. Class 36. An electric conductor 1 is insulated with a glass fabric 2 impregnated with polymeric material, and a superposed glass braid 3, the polymeric material being fused into a continuous and adherent covering. The polymeric material consists of polytetrafluoroethylene or a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and another polymerizable organic compound containing an ethylenic double bond. The copolymer may comprise 60-85 per cent tetrafluoroethylene and 40-15 per cent ethylene. The conductor may be wrapped with a polymeric tape 4 before the application of the impregnated glass fabric, and the outer glass braid may have a coating 5 comprising a suspensoid of the polymeric material. The insulating layers are applied to the conductor in the conventional manner and the conductor is then passed through an oven heated to 621‹-930‹ F., which fuses the polymeric material.
