Abstract

674,994. Cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., and LORCH, H. R. Oct. 13, 1950 [Oct. 14, 1949], No. 26390/49. Class 36. [Also in Group XXII] An insulated electric conductor comprises one or more wires embedded in powdered talc and enclosed in an aluminium sheath which has been drawn down to compress the powder. The aluminium sheath may be extruded around, but not in contact with, the wires, the space within the sheath being filled with dry talc powder as the sheath is formed, or the cable may be made by applying the powder to the wires in the form of a paste which is then dried and around which the aluminium sheath is extruded. The aluminium sheath is formed in an extrusion press having a hollow ram 1 within which is a hollow mandrel 5 through which the wire 11 is passed. If the talc is to be applied as a powder it is fed from a hopper 7 supported above the mandrel 5, and is forced into the extruded aluminium sheath by a damper 9. The covered wire then passes through a reducing die 12 which draws down aluminium sheath and compresses the talc. In the alternative method the talc is in the form of a paste and is applied to the wire by extrusion. The wire then passes through a drying oven. before reaching the aluminium press, from which the hopper and ram are omitted.
