Abstract

735,847. Insulation; semiconductor materials. RADIATION RESEARCH CORPORATION. Dec. 8, 1953, No. 34062/53. Drawings to Specification. Classes 36 and 37. [Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (b)] The resistivity characteristics of insulating material under ionizing radiation are improved by subjecting the material to a dose of radiation substantially in excess of that required to raise the conductivity of the material to a value that does not increase thereafter. This large dose of radiation has the effect of reducing the conductivity of the insulating material to a value which may be less than that of the material prior to exposure to any radiation. Removal of the radiation source causes the conductivity of the material to return to the value it had prior to exposure, and any subsequent exposure causes the material to acquire at once the conductivity corresponding to that which obtained just prior to the removal of the original radiation. Polystyrene, mica, amber and polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene reinforced with fibre glass may be treated in this manner and small quantities of materials such as antioxidants added to the plastic materials may result in additional improvement in the conductivity. Insulating material treated in this manner may be employed in electric cables, especially coaxial cables.
