Abstract
A substance of high molecular weight having a structure of chains consisting largely or wholly of carbon atoms, a substantial proportion of which carbon atoms have one or two hydrogen atoms attached thereto, such as polythene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, neoprene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol and polymethyl methacrylate, is subjected to the action of ionizing radiation in amount sufficient to bring about increase in the resistance of the substance to the solvent action of organic solvents but insufficient to cause any appreciable change in the mechanical properties of the substance at ordinary temperatures. Irradiation may be with high-energy neutrons, gamma rays, X-rays, or high energy protons, electrons or helium ions. A convenient source of suitable radiation is a thermal nuclear reactor operating at a power level of about 3 mega-watts.ALSO:A substance of high molecular weight having a structure of chains consisting largely or wholly of carbon atoms, a substantial proportion of which carbon atoms have one or two hydrogen atoms attached thereto, such as rubber, gutta percha, rubber hydrochloride, paraffin wax, polythene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, neoprene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, and polymethyl methacrylate, is subjected to the action of ionizing radiation in amount sufficient to bring about increase in the resistance of the substance to the solvent action of organic solvents but insufficient to cause any appreciable change in the mechanical properties of the substance at ordinary temperatures. Irradiation may be with high energy neutrons, gamma rays, X-rays or high-energy protons, electrons or helium ions. A convenient source of suitable radiations is a thermal nuclear reactor operating at a power level of about 3 megawatts.ALSO:Rubber, gutta percha or rubber hydrochloride is subjected to the action of ionizing radiation in amount sufficient to bring about increase in its resistance to the solvent action of organic solvents but insufficient to cause any appreciable change in its mechanical properties at ordinary temperatures. Irradiation may be with high energy neutrons, gamma rays, X-rays or high energy protons, electrons or helium ions. A convenient source of suitable radiations is a thermal nuclear reactor operating at a power level of about 3 megawatts.
