Abstract

Substances of high molecular weight characterized by a structure of chains consisting largely or wholly of carbon atoms and which have been subjected to the action of ionizing radiation, particularly in a thermal nuclear reactor, in amount of at least 1016 thermal neutrons per square centimetre, or the equivalent, are treated to remove or to reduce the amount of substances of relatively low molecular weight, preferably by heating at low pressure or by solvent extraction. The substances treated may be those referred to in Specification 732,047, viz. polythene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, neoprene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol and polymethyl methacrylate.ALSO:Paraffin wax subjected to ionizing radiation by the process of Specification 732,047 is treated to remove or to reduce the amount of substances of relatively low molecular weight, preferably by heating at low pressure or by solvent extraction.ALSO:Rubber, smoked rubber or guttapercha subjected to ionising radiation by the process of Specification 732,047 is treated to remove or to reduce the amount of substances of relatively low molecular weight, preferably by heating at low pressure or by solvent extraction.
