Abstract

High molecular weight polyoxymethylene is prepared by irradiating solid trioxane with ionizing radiation to a dosage of 0.001 to 10 megarads and simultaneously or subsequently while the trioxane is still in an activated state, subjecting the trioxane to polymerizing conditions. The irradiation may be effected to a dosage of 0.02 to 1 megarad at a temperature of 25 DEG C. or more (say 55 DEG C.) so that polymerization takes place immediately or the irradiation may be at below 25 DEG C. and polymerization subsequently effected by raising the temperature to above 25 DEG C. A stabilizer, e.g. calcium acetate, may be incorporated in the polymer.
