Abstract
A polymer or copolymer containing oxymethylene groups is irradiated with high energy irradiation to reduce its average molecular weight. Polymers of trioxane and its copolymer with epichlorohdyrin are specified. The radiation dose may be from 0.01 to 36 megarads or preferably 0.1 to 36 megarads; the radiation may comprise electrons of energy from 0.000015 to 5.0 mev, and the irradiation may be carried out in vacuo or in an inert atmosphere. The polymer may be held, after irradiation, at a temperature above its melting point for 10 to 60 seconds, and may be heated to 170 DEG to 200 DEG C for this time.
