Abstract

Acrylonitrile homopolymers and copolymers in aquagel form are impregnated with an N-vinyl heterocyclic monomer, exposed to high energy radiation to initiate graft polymerization, and then heated without irreversibly drying the aquagel in order to complete the polymerization. The acrylonitrile polymer aquagel is preferably in the form of a shaped article, e.g. film or fibre. The N-vinyl heterocyclic monomer may be N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl caprolactam, N-vinyl piperidone, N-vinyl oxazolidinone, N-vinyl oxazinidone and N-vinyl morpholinone and alkyl derivatives of such monomers. The monomer may be used as such, or in the form of a solution in water or an organic solvent. The high energy radiation may be of the beta or gamma type from a source of radio-activity, or may be from an electron beam generator or an X-ray generator. The heating of the irradiated aquagel is preferably carried out at 90 DEG to 102 DEG C. for a period of from 90 to 20 seconds. The resulting products show improved dyeability. Specification 843,063 is referred to.
