Abstract
A shaped structure comprising an organic polymeric material is modified by subjecting it to ionizing radiation other than electromagnetic radiation alone, particularly accelerated electrons, the structure, after having been irradiated, being contacted with one or more unsaturated compounds which are capable of homopolymerization, the temperature of the structure during irradiation and up until the time of contacting with the unsaturated compound being maintained below room temperature, preferably below 0 DEG C. Suitable polymeric materials and unsaturated compounds are as in the parent specification. Non-polymerizing substances may be reacted simultaneously, e.g. methylene blue may be attached to irradiated nylon by reacting the nylon with potassium acrylate in a solution in which methylene blue has been dissolved. Examples describe the irradiation of polyethylene tereph-thalate, polyacrylonitrile, cotton and nylon fabrics at low temperatures followed by immersion in potassium acrylate solution, the irradiation of nylon followed by heating in dimethylbutadiene and the irradiation of polyethylene film followed by exposure to aqueous or methanol solutions of potassium acrylate, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, methacrolein, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate or 2-vinyl pyridine. Nonpolymerizing substances may be reacted simultaneously, e.g. methylene blue may be attached to irradiated nylon by reacting the nylon with potassium acrylate in a solution in which methylene blue has been dissolved. Examples describe the irradiation of polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylonitrile, cotton and nylon fabrics at low temperatures, followed by immersion in potassium acrylate solution, the irradiation of nylon followed by heating in dimethylbutadiene, and the irradiation of polyethylene film followed by exposure to aqueous or methanol solutions of potassium acrylate, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, methacralein, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate or 2-vinyl pyridine.
