Abstract

A shaped structure comprising an organic polymeric material is modified by subjecting it to ionizing electromagnetic radiation, particularly X-rays or g -rays, the structure, after having been irradiated, being contacted with one or more unsaturated organic compounds which are capable of homopolymerization, the temperature of the structure during irradiation and up until the time of contacting with the unsaturated compound being maintained below room temperature, preferably below 0 DEG C. The polymeric material may be polyethylene, polystyrene, polybutadiene, rubber, polyisobutylene, a butadiene-styrene copolymer, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polychloroprene, poly-tetrafluoroethylene, polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinyl acetate, polymethyl methacrylate, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose, regenerated cellulose, polytetrahydrofuran, polyformaldehyde, a dioxolane polymer, a phenolurea- or triazine-formaldehyde polymer, a polyamide, a polyimide, polyacrylonitrile, cotton, wool or silk. The unsaturated compound may be styrene, acrylic acid or a derivative thereof, itaconic acid, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, a vinyl ketone or ether, divinyl ether, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, 1:3-butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, 2:3-dimethyl-1:3- butadiene, phenyl acetylene, ethylene, propylene, an allyl ester, a halogen-, sulphur-, nitrogen- or phosphorus-containing vinyl compound or a vinyl silane. Non-polymerizing compounds may be reacted simultaneously, e.g. methylene blue may be attached to irradiated nylon by reacting nylon with potassium acrylate in a solution in which methylene blue has been dissolved. An example describes the X-ray irradiation at low temperature of nylon, wool and silk fabrics followed by treatment with sodium styrene sulphonate, the resulting fabric having improved antistatic properties. Specifications 820,120, 834,557, 838,412, and 845,898 are referred to.ALSO:A shaped structure comprising an organic polymeric material is modified by subjecting it to ionizing electromagnetic radiation, particularly X-rays or Y-rays, the structure, after having been irradiated, being contacted with one or more unsaturated organic compounds which are capable of homopolymerization, the temperature of the structure during irradiation and up until the time of contacting with the unsaturated compound being maintained below room temperature, preferably below 0 DEG C. (see Group IV(a)) for lists of suitable polymers and monomers).
