1309051 Acrylic filaments and fibres MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 24 May 1971 [27 May 1970 5 June 1970 8 June 1970 12 June 1970] 16717/71 Heading B5B Acrylic fibres having at least 3 wedge-shaped surface depressions per inch, the elongated axis of the depressions lying along the filament axis, are made by first treating the fibres with a modifying agent which renders the fibre surface insoluble in DMF at 100 C., and then treating them with an organic compound which is a solvent only for the interior, unmodified portion of the fibres. The modifying agent may be KOH, NaOH, H 2 SO 4 or a hydroxylamine salt (e.g. sulphate or phosphate). Glycerine may be added to this agent, and the fibres may also be treated with, e.g., acetic or oxalic acid before the next step. The organic compound may be DMF, ethylene carbonate, dimethyl acetamide, acetonitrile or DMS or a mixture or aqueous solution thereof. In this step, treatment may be effected by simple immersion, optionally followed by a squeezing and heating step, or vapour of the organic compound may be used. The depressions may be 0À5-20 Á long and 0À2-10Á deep. The modified surface layer may constitute 0À5-40% of the fibre. In examples acrylonitrile containing a small quantity of vinyl acetate or methyl methacrylate as comonomer is treated. The fibres have a soft hand and show strong resistance to pilling.
