Abstract

Start chain polymers or copolymers including a given radical at each end of the chain are produced by a process in which a homogeneous mixture of at least one vinyl or divinyl monomer and an additional substance capable of giving off free radicals in an amount of 94.8 per cent by volume of the mixture is subjected to the action of an ionizing radiation capable of breaking up the additional substance into two free radicals, whereby polymer or copolymer chains of relatively low degree of polymerization are formed which include the two radicals at their respective ends. Examples describe the irradiation of a solution of styrene in toluene with gamma rays.ALSO:Short chain polymers or copolymers including a given radical at each end of the chain are produced by a process in which a homogeneous mixture of at least one vinyl or divinyl monomer and an additional substance capable of giving off free radicals in an amount of at least 94.8 per cent by volume of the mixture, is subjected to the action of an ionizing radiation capable of breaking up the additional substance into two free radicals, whereby polymer or copolymer chains of relatively low degree of polymerization are formed which include the two radicals at their respective ends.
