Abstract
At least one ethylenic monomer which is capable of being polymerized by free-radical polymerization is polymerized on the corresponding polymer by subjecting the polymer to ionizing radiations such as gamma rays and then adding further polymer chains having substantially the same quantitative composition as the starting polymer. Irradiation may be effected on the polymer alone prior to contacting with the monomer, or on the monomer-polymer mixture. The Specification refers to the polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene on polytetrafluorethylene, of styrene on polystyrene, of methyl methacrylate on polymethyl methacrylate, of ethylene on polyethylene, and of a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate on a styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer. There may be incorporated a small amount of a chain transfer agent or a cross-linking agent, and one example describes the irradiation of a polystyrene film swollen with styrene containing 1% of divinyl benzene.
