Abstract

A vulcanized solid rubber composition is prepared by subjecting to ionizing radiation a mixture of 100 parts by weight of either Hevea rubber or Styrene-butadiene copolymer and 1,5 to 15 parts of an accelerator, which may be an alkyl acrylate, or an acrylic or methacrylic ester of a saturated dihydric or a polydihydric alcohol. A suitable radiation dosage comprises 4 to 40 watt hours per pound of composition and X-rays gamma rays, beta rays, a particles and high speed protons, electrons or neutrons may be used. Preferred accelerators include tetramethylene diacrylate, octyl acrylate, ethylene diacrylate.
