Abstract

Polymers containing chains of alternate silicon and oxygen atoms having substituents attached to the silicon atoms are cross-linked by subjection to ionising radiations, e.g. gamma rays, high energy neutrons, deuterons, helium ions, protons and electrons. Irradiation doses of 0.1 to 5 units may be used, the unit dose being 1017 thermal neutrons per cm.2 or 50 X 106 roentgens. In an example a liquid methyl silicone is irradiated in a thermal nuclear reactor operating at a power level of 3.5 megawatts and a thermal neutron flux of 1.2 X 1012 cm.2/sec. for four days to form a slightly elastic solid. Specification 732,047 is referred to.
