Abstract
919,192. Detecting neutrons. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. July 10, 1959 [Sept. 5, 1958], No. 23862/59. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] A neutron dosage meter comprises a body of heterogeneous glass having two or more juxtaposed zones, one of the zones reacting to neutron irradiation in a different manner from the others, the body deforming when irradiated by neutrons, to a degree which is a function of the dose received. In one example two rods of glass, one of which is rich in boron, each has one of its ends softened by heat; the softened ends are brought into contact with each other and the rods drawn away from the softened ends to form a glass wire. After cooling, the wire has a certain curvature due to differential contraction, and on exposure to neutrons the curvature alters as a function of neutron dose. In another example a plate of glass rich in boron is treated on one face with sulphuric acid to eliminate the boron for half the thickness of the plate. The plate curves on exposure to neutrons, the curvature being a function of neutron dose. The dosage meters may be introduced into a nuclear reactor and can be made to operate an electric switch when a predetermined dose has been absorbed; an electric heating device may be provided to restore the dosage meter to its original condition.
