1,138,579. Utilizing energy of radiation. SANDERS NUCLEAR CORP. 24 Nov., 1967 [5 April, 1967], No. 53675/67. Heading G6P. In a radioisotope thermal power source a mixture of thulium oxide 169 and a moderator is neutron irradiated in a nuclear reactor to produce thulium 170. The moderator reduces neutron flux depression in the reactor during the irradiation process. In one embodiment the thulium oxide and moderator are both powders while in an alternative form, separate layers of isotope material and moderator are employed. The source is sealed within a molybdenum liner and the moderator may be carbon, graphite, beryllium or heavy water.
