Abstract

Pigments containing lead titanate are obtained by calcining at say 600--1000 DEG C. a mixture of powdered titaniferous ore and a lead compound or metallic lead. Ilmenite, titaniferous magnetite, or rutile may be used before or after dressing, and the lead p compound may be the oxide, basic carbonate, or acetate. The lead compound or metallic lead may be used in relatively small quantities, say 1--10 per cent of the weight of the ore, or quantities up to or in excess of the equivalent of the titanium in the ore may be used. In any case a part of the lead compound used may remain as such or as oxide in the product, which has excellent rust proof qualities. Specification 405,340 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also the following subject-matter:--the use, in the process, of ore residues such as the undissolved sludge obtained when treating titanium ores with acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
