Abstract
Complex zinc ores, which need not be roasted, are treated with hydrochloric acid containing free chlorine obtained at a later stage of the process, instead of with hydrochloric acid alone as in the parent case. The free chlorine attacks the gold and part of the silver. The gold chloride dissolves with the other metal compounds and the silver chloride is dissolved by magnesium chloride. The solution is treated with carbonic acid in presence of an excess of ore to separate calcium as carbonate, and the liquor is rapidly decanted leaving the ore behind but carrying off the calcium carbonate in suspension. The calcium carbonate is filtered off and the solution is treated with magnesium sulphate to separate lead, with copper to obtain metallic gold and silver, and then as described in the parent case to obtain zinc oxide or carbonate and a residual solution of magnesium chloride which is converted into magnesium oxychloride. The oxychloride is calcined with the admission of the requisite quantity of air to yield a mixture of chlorine and hydrochloric acid for use again.
