Abstract

In making amido-sulphonic acid by hydrolysing ammonium imido-sulphonate with or without ammonium - nitrolo - sulphonate and separating crystals of the acid, the hydrolysis is carried out at an elevated temperature, e.g. at about 50 DEG C., in sulphuric acid solution of such concentration that after separating the amido-sulphonic acid crystals, the mother liquor contains at least 50 per cent sulphuric acid. Where ammonium nitrilo-sulphonate is present, it is first hydrolysed to the imido-sulphonate in solution in water or dilute sulphuric acid, and the imido-sulphonate is then hydrolysed as above. After hydrolysis the mixture may be allowed to cool and stand for some hours before suction filtration of the acid crystals which may be washed with a saturated aqueous solution of amido-sulphonic acid. According to the prior art, amido-sulphonic acid has been produced from ammonium imido-sulphonate by hydrolysis in weakly acid solution saturated with ammonium sulphate, followed by neutralization with ammonia gas, the solution after separation of amido-sulphonic acid being worked up to yield further amido - sulphonic acid and ammonium sulphate (vide German Specification 564,123). In another process, solid or dissolved salts of amido- or imido-sulphonic acid are treated with excess nitric acid or determined concentration, use being made of the low solubility of amido-sulphonic acid in 50-60 per cent nitric acid by adjusting the concentration of the acid to give this concentration in the reaction liquid after precipitation of the amido-sulphonic acid.
