Abstract

In the extraction of sugar from molasses by precipitation with barium hydroxide and subsequent carbonation, the concentration of barium ions is maintained above that necessary for the precipitation of mono-barium saccharate by addition of hydroxide sufficient to replace the ions removed, and crystallization is initiated by the introduction of mono-barium saccharate crystals separately produced from pure sugar and barium hydroxide. Barium hydroxide solution is added to slightly dilute molasses at a temperature not exceeding 20 DEG C. The barium hydroxide is added to maintain the pH value until that value suddenly increases owing to the cessation of the formation of the saccharate. The precipitate is filtered off, washed with barium hydrate solution, worked into a paste with water, and treated with carbon dioxide or gases containing carbon dioxide. U.S.A.
