Abstract
Crystallised basic calcium chlorate (CA(ClO3)2: Ca(OH)2 is precipitated from solutions of calcium chlorate and chloride by adding 1 to 1.1 mol. of Ca(OH)2 per mol. of chlorate to the solution kept at 100 DEG C. or below which has a total calcium chloride + chlorate concentration of 2.7-3.5 mols. per kg. of solution, and a mol ratio CaCl2 : Ca(ClO3)2 not exceeding 0.7, this maximum ratio corresponding to an optimum total calcium salt concentration of about 2.9 mols. per kilo of solution. In a cyclic process a solution rich in chloride is treated above 105 DEG C. with lime to precipitate basic calcium chloride, the filtrate concentrated and cooled to 100 DEG C. or below, treated with lime as above to precipitate basic calcium chlorate, and the final filtrate used to suspend lime for the two precipitation states. The basic C CaCl2. Ca(OH)2 may be decomposed with water to yield calcium chloride and lime for re-use. The basic chlorate may be dried, and mixed with a small proportion of quicklime to prevent agglomeration and to react with chloride and chlorate from the mother liquor. It may be used as weed killer or converted into pure chlorate by suspension in water and removal of precipitated lime. Specifications 601,928 and 615,438 are referred to.
