Abstract

Precipitated calcium carbonate and ammonium nitrate are obtained from impure limestone, ammonia, and nitric acid by first dissolving the limestone in nitric acid, purifying the solution of calcium nitrate obtained, reacting the pure solution with ammonium carbonate, removing the precipitated carbonate and evaporating the remaining solution of ammonium nitrate. The ammonium carbonate solution may be obtained by collecting the carbon dioxide evolved in the first step of the process in an aqueous solution of ammonia.
