Abstract

In the production of potassium nitrate from nitric acid and potassium sulphate, the process of the parent Specification is modified by using less nitric acid than is used in the parent case and separating the precipitated potassium nitrate before the double salt KHSO4, KNO3 is formed. By this means larger yields of potassium nitrate are obtained, and the mother liquor corresponds in composition to a solution saturated with the double salt. In an example, the solution of potassium sulphate in nitric acid is effected at 50 DEG C., and the solution is cooled to 0 DEG C. in 40 minutes before the separation of potassium nitrate. The mother liquor is used for decomposing phosphates.
