Abstract
The sodium nitrate in a mixture of sodium and potassium nitrates containing also ammonium nitrate and ammonium chloride is converted to potassium nitrate and the latter recovered by the following sequence of operations. The nitrate mixture is placed in a mother liquor from a preceding operation, potassium chloride or sylvinite added, and the whole heated say to 80 DEG C. Sodium chloride precipitates and is separated, and after dilution the liquor is cooled to crystallize potassium nitrate which is separated. A part of the mother liquor returns to the first operation. The nitrate mixture may be obtained by reacting ammonium nitrate with sylvinite, in which case the mother liquor not used as above described is utilized in this reaction. An example is given.
