Abstract

Magnesium hydroxide is obtained in readily filterable condition and in good yield by treating a solution of a magnesium salt such as the sulphate or chloride with a large excess of ammonia, say three times the quantity theoretically necessary, which is preferably added in the gaseous form. Excess ammonia is recovered from the mother liquor, which may then be concentrated to obtain the ammonium salt remaining in solution. A light form of hydroxide may be obtained by treating a solution containing at least 8 per cent of MgS04 with ammonia gas in an amount say 3.23 times that theoretically necessary; whilst a heavier, crystalline form may be produced by adding a solution containing 16 per cent of Mg S04 gradually and with agitation to an equal volume of water, whilst slowly introducing ammonia gas in an amount double the theoretical quantity, a further quantity of ammonia being then added more quickly. The heavy form of hydroxide may be used in the preparation of fertilisers.
