Abstract

Aluminium and potash present together in minerals are converted into nitrates and the resulting mixed nitrates are separated by washing with nitric acid which removes all the potash but little aluminium. In an example, leucite is treated with a residual liquor containing nitric acid, potassium nitrate and aluminium nitrate obtained at a subsequent stage in the process. After the insoluble silicic acid has been filtered off and the solution slightly evaporated, pure potassium nitrate separates on cooling. The mother-liquor is further concentrated to obtain a mixture of potassium and aluminium nitrates on crystallizing. By washing with 60 per cent nitric acid, pure aluminium nitrate remains while the wash liquor containing aluminium and potassium nitrates is used for treating further quantities of leucite after the addition of nitric acid. When stronger nitric acid is employed for treating the crystalline mixture of nitrates, less aluminium is obtained in solution, so there is less aluminium in the circulating liquor.ALSO:Aluminium and potash present together in minerals are converted into nitrates and the resulting mixed nitrates are separated by washing with nitric acid which removes all the potash but little aluminium.
