Manures comprising mixed crystals containing potassium and ammonium salts, which may be used as fertilizers are obtained by separating the solid deposit from an aqueous solution saturated with the. chlorides or nitrates or both of potassium and ammonium together with sodium salts if desired and which is in equilibrium with at least three solid phases of the said salts, and adding to the separated solution solid potassium or ammonium nitrate or chloride or a mixture of two or more of them with or without sodium or other metal salts. To the mother liquor may be added potassium, ammonium, or sodium salts other than those first added to obtain further mixed crystals and, for continuing the process, a second mother liquor of similar composition to the solution first employed. In each case the added salts are preferably dissolved as far as possible by warming and the mixed crystals then separated by cooling to the initial temperature. Soluble phosphates may also be added to the solutions used to obtain mixed crystals containing them. Examples describe the treatment of the following saturated solutions :-a solution of ammonium, potassium, and sodium nitrates with ammonium nitrate to obtain mixed crystals of ammonium and potassium nitrates and of the resulting mother liquor with mixed potassium and sodium nitrates to obtain mixed crystals of all three nitrates; a solution of potassium and ammonium nitrates and ammonium chloride with ammonium nitrate to obtain mixed crystals of the nitrates with a little chloride, and of the resulting mother liquor with potassium chloride to obtain a mixture of mixed crystals containing both chlorides and nitrates; and a solution of potassium, ammonium, and sodium nitrates and ammonium chloride with ammonium nitrate to obtain mixed crystals comprising nitrates, and of the resulting mother liquor with mixed potassium and sodium chlorides to obtain a mixture of mixed crystals containing both chlorides and nitrates.
