Abstract
In a cyclic process for the production of potassium nitrate from magnesium nitrate and potassium sulphate, a solution approximately saturated at an elevated temperature, say 50 DEG C., with potassium nitrate and sulphate and potassium-magnesium sulphate is cooled to 25 DEG C. or lower, for example, to 0 DEG C., with precipitation of potassium nitrate; the mother liquor obtained after separation thereof is heated with evaporation of water corresponding to that introduced as water of crystallization by p magnesium nitrate and potassium sulphate, which are added in quantities equivalent to the separated potassium nitrate, whereupon potassium-magnesium sulphate separates, thus reproducing the original solution. In a modification, potassium sulphate and magnesium nitrate may also be added prior to cooling. The magnesium nitrate may be employed in the hydrated condition, but preferably it is introduced into the solution as magnesia, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate or basic magnesium carbonate and nitric acid or nitrous gases. Potassium-magnesium sulphate produced may be used as a fertilizer or as an addition to mixed fertilizers, but preferably it is decomposed for recovery of potassium sulphate.
