Abstract
A cyclic process for the production of a mixture of potassium and sodium nitrates from sylvinite, in which ammonium chloride or ammonium chloride and soda are obtained as bye-products comprises the following steps: (1) The potassium content of sylvinite is adjusted by addition of potassium chloride so that its potassium-sodium ratio is the same as that in glaserite (3K2SO4.Na2SO4) and the mixture is reacted with ammonia and an ammonium chloride solution containing ammonium sulphate obtained in step (2) to form a precipitate of glaserite, which, after separation from the mother liquor, is treated with calcium carbonate and nitric acid, whereby a precipitate of gypsum containing double sulphates of potassium and calcium such as syngenite or potassium calcium pentosulphate is formed, together with a solution of potassium and sodium nitrates, which is evaporated to dryness; (2) The glaserite mother liquor is cooled to separate out part of its ammonium chloride and then treated with carbonic acid to form ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate which is reacted with the gypsum obtained in step (1) to produce a mixture of ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, and calcium carbonate which is used preferably without separation of the calcium carbonate to treat further quantities of sylvinite. Alternatively, sylvinite may be used in step (1) without addition of potassium chloride, in which case the glaserite mother liquor contains sodium chloride in addition to ammonium chloride and ammonia. Step (2) is modified by subjecting the liquor, after separation of part of its ammonium chloride by cooling, to the Solway process to form soda and the mother liquor therefrom, containing ammonium chloride and carbonate, is then treated with gypsum as before.
