Abstract

In the production of fertilizers by treating calcium phosphate with nitric acid and potassium sulphate, the calcium sulphate separated is reacted with ammoniacal ammonium chloride to produce ammonium sulphate which is then reacted with potassium chloride or crude sylvinite in presence of ammonia to obtain the potassium sulphate required in the process. When potassium chloride is used, the mother liquor after separation of potassium sulphate, is cooled to separate ammonium chloride, then carbon dioxide is led in and calcium sulphate is stirred in. When crude sylvinite is used, the precipitated potassium sulphate is freed from its associated potassium chloride by washing with water, and the ammonium chloride mother liquor cooled to separate some ammonium chloride and then subjected to the Solvay process, sodium bicarbonate being precipitated and removed; the mother liquor, which contains ammonium chloride and carbonate, is stirred with calcium sulphate to obtain ammonium sulphate as described above. The mixture obtained from the calcium phosphate treatment, after separating the calcium sulphate, contains free phosphoric acid and potassium nitrate; it may be converted into a fertilizer by neutralizing with ammonia. It is stated that the process may be carried out with a larger amount of sulphuric acid in circulation than is equivalent to the potassium, so that a precipitate of potassium sulphate alone or of potassium and sodium sulphates may be obtained instead of the potassium sulphate and chloride; and that the potassium content of the final product may be diminished in relation to the nitrogen in a desired ratio by adjusting the ratio between potassium and sodium in the initial potassium material. Specification 282,330 as open to inspection under Sect. 91(3)(a) is referred to.
