Manures.-In the method of obtaining a mixture of calcium nitrate and ammonium nitrate by treating calcium carbonate, obtained by the action of ammonia and carbon dioxide on calcium sulphate and with which some of the ammonium - sulphate formed is associated, with nitric acid, as described in the parent Specification, the reaction is carried out so that calcium sulphate is crystallized as semi-hydrate, which is re-crystallized as gypsum for separation from the solution. The formation of semi-hydrate is secured by carrying out the reaction at a high temperature or in a concentrated solution, and the re-crystallization by cooling or dilution. Small gypsum crystals or fragments separated from the product of a previous operation are added to the solution to promote the re-crystallization.
