Abstract

Ammonia; ammonium compounds containing metals.-In obtaining potassium nitrate by the reaction of calcium nitrate and potassium chloride, ammonia is added to the solution before the saparation of potassium nitrate to increase the yield, and preferably also after such separation, thereby precipitating calcium chloride as CaCl2.6NH3 and allowing the liquors to be worked up to obtain more potassium nitrate, or to be used for the conversion of fresh amounts of the reactants. By heating the addition compound of calcium chloride with ammonia, calcium .chloride and ammonia are obtained, the recovery of pure ammonia from gaseous mixtures containing ammonia resulting if such mixtures are used in the process. In an example potassium chloride is added to a solution of calcium nitrate. After cooling to 0‹ C., whereupon a part of the potassium nitrate separates, gaseous ammonia is passed in whereupon further potassium nitrate separates. The remaining solution is saturated with ammonia at 0‹ C. under a pressure of five atmospheres whereupon CaCl2.6NH3 separates. According to one of the Provisional Specifications ammonia may be separated from gases containing it by passing such gases through solutions of other salts capable of forming addition compounds with ammonia, such as salts of calcium or magnesium.
