Abstract

Solutions containing ammonium phosphate and nitrate are treated to precipitate an insoluble phosphate, and the latter after separation from the remaining ammonium nitrate solution is reconverted to ammonium phosphate by treatment with ammonia. Ferric nitrate may be used as precipitant, the solution preferably be maintained faintly alkaline during precipitation, and the ferric hydroxide obtained on reforming ammonium phosphate be reconverted to nitrate for re-use; or it may be used as such in the precipitation step. When the mixture of phosphate and nitrate has been obtained from phosphate rock by treatment with nitric acid in conjunction with ammonium sulphate followed by neutralization of the solution with ammonia the ammonium phosphate recovered from the iron &c. phosphate may be added during the neutralizing step. In such case the major portion of the ammonium phosphate may be recovered directly from solution by crystallization. Specificatio 343,701 is referred to.
