Abstract

278,411. Bury, E. March 24, 1927. Ammonium sulphate.-In a process for obtaining zinc hydrate or oxide and ammonium sulphate from zinc waste, such as from smelting operations or from the manufacture of zinc or galvanized products, the waste is leached with sulphuric acid and then treated with excess of ammonia. The zinc sulphate solution is thus converted to soluble zinc hydrate, and iron, alumina, &c. present as impurities to insoluble hydrates which are removed by sedimentation, bringing down also gelatinous silica, and by fil-- tration. The residue is boiled down and precipitates zinc hydrate, the ammonia being recovered by known means. The remaining ammonium sulphate solution is evaporated to produce crystals. The zinc hydrate may be calcined to oxide.
