Abstract
274,297. Stevens, R. H., Norris, G. C., and Watson, W. N. Aug. 23, 1926. Drawings to Specification. Zinc, copper, and vanadium sulphates.-Bulky or gelatinous precipitates of silica with or without ferric iron, or alumina, obtained bv neutralizing solutions of zinc, copper, or vanadium with basic. material such as zinc oxide, lime or ground limestone, are converted to granular form by agitating them at a. temperature of 40-65‹ C., and preferably at 55‹ C., in the presence of excess of the basic material. Metallic values are recovered from the granulated precipitate by passing it in the form of a filter cake through a series of washing-chambers, in which it is treated with acid liquors. Liquor from the first wash is passed on with the metal-bearing filtrate for further treatment, whilst that from each later wash is used as wash liquor for the next earlier wash, fresh acid being added to the wash liquor of an intermediate wash, and residual liquor being finally displaced from the cake by means of water. The invention is particularly applicable to solutions obtained by leaching ores &c. of zinc, copper, and vanadium with sulphuric acid, which may contain 3-35 grms. of silica per litre. When dealing with zinc sulphate solutions carrying from 10-20 grms. or from 20-30 grms. of dissolved silica per litre, the zinc concentration of the solution should be limited respectively to 95 grms. per litre or to 85-95 grms. per litre. The treatment of zinc and copper ores to obtain sulphate solutions for electrolysis is fully described, and flow sheets for these processes are included in the Specification. In treating zinc sulphate solutions, phosphorus may be removed together with the other impurities in the manner described in Specification 269,778.
