Abstract

Titaniferous iron ore is heated with sulphuric acid and the mass is extracted with water to dissolve the titanium and iron sulphates the solution being then treated electrolytically or by addition of iron to reduce any ferric sulphate to the ferrous state. The ferrous sulphate is then crystallized out, and titanium oxide obtained from the liquor by hydrolysis under pressure. The ferrous sulphate is calcined to produce sulphur trioxide which is led into the mother liquor to render it strong enough to be used for sulphating the next charge of titaniferous ore.
