Abstract
249,764. Field, S., Petersson, E. F., Harris, W. E., and Metals Extraction Corporation, Ltd. Dec. 29, 1924. Roasting.- A zinc sulphide ore or product, containing iron and/or manganese, is roasted in air preferably at 650‹ C. until the sulphur content is so far reduced, for instance to about 9 per cent, that the admission of steam does not cause the production of sulphuretted hydrogen. Steam is then admitted for the remainder of the roasting, sulphur dioxide being liberated as before. This process prevents or minimizes the production of manganites and ferrites. A higher temperature may be used if desired. An example describes the treatment of Broken Hill ore. The roasted ore is treated with hot sulphuric acid, the zinc sulphate being purified and electrolyzed for example in the manner described in Specification 249,609, [Class 41, Electrolysis]. The Provisional Specification describes the roasting of the ore under such conditions that a minimum quantity of ferrites and manganites are formed, the proportion of sulphates formed being arranged to make up the losses of sulphuric acid in the extraction and electrolytic processes. Another method of roasting is also described in which the ore is heated in a muffle in steam so as to produce oxides and sulphates as before, but the sulphur is liberated as sulphuretted hydrogen. Specification 26350/12 also is referred to.
