Abstract
Zinc is recovered from matte containing sulphides of iron and zinc by digesting the matte with aqueous sulphuric acid, controlling the digestion to produce (1) an aqueous solution of ferrous sulphate substantially free from all other elements present in the original matter, (2) hydrogen sulphide containing the sulphur combined with the iron of the matte, (3) one or more solid products containing substantially all the zinc, and separating the solution from the products. The finely divided solid matte, obtained by smelting iron sulphide ore, may be treated at above 25 DEG C., say 50-70 DEG C., countercurrent in a series of vats by continuously introducing raw matte into the first vat and acid into the last vat of the series to produce a neutral, saturated solution of ferrous sulphate and a solid residue containing, besides zinc sulphide, the sulphides of cobalt, copper, gold, nickel, platinum, or silver. Part of the zinc may be recovered as zinc sulphate from a intermediate stage. A residue containing copper and zinc sulphides may be separated either (1) by roasting in air, digesting the oxide product with sulphuric acid and precipitating the copper with hydrogen sulphide or (2) by roasting in air with sulphuric acid, forming an aqueous solution of the sulphates and precipitating the copper with hydrogen sulphide. The hydrogen sulphide may be that from the acid matte treatment and the resulting zinc sulphate solution may be returned to the acid matte treatment. Specifications 566,375 and 656,141 are referred to.
