Abstract
1443100 Production of copper BOLIDEN AB 23 Aug 1974 37205/74 Heading C7D In a process for the production of Cu from raw material containing Cu, S, Zn and >0À2% Ni (based on the Cu content), the material is smelted to matte, which is converted to Cu, the slag from the smelting stage passing to a fuming furnace where Zn is distilled off, and the liquid slag from the conversion stage being withdrawn at the "white metal" (Cu2S) stage and passed to a furnace where it is agitated with a sulphide of Cu, Fe or Ni, the treated slag passing to the fuming furnace and the Cu and Ni separated being returned to the matte. The preferred sulphide is copper pyrites and the process preferably occurs in a rotary furnace, eg a Kaldo-type furnace. The matte formed by the reaction of the slag from the conversion stage and the sulphide material is blown with O 2- containing gas to form Cu and NiO slag, or a Cu-Ni alloy.
