Abstract

1279384 Removing iron from cobalt copper and nickel sulphides INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 16 Feb 1970 [14 Feb 1969] 7382/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Iron is removed from a material containing one or more of Co, Cu and Ni and less than 10% Fe, by forming the material into a molten sulphide bath, with at least enough S to satisfy the stoichiometry of the non-ferrous metal sulphides; turbulently contacting the bath with a liquid slag containing 5-35% Fe 2 O 3 and 25- 35% SiO 2 , balance FeO; surface blowing the slag with an oxygen containing gas, whereby the Fe is oxidized to FeO which dissolves in the slag, until the Fe content of the melt is below 1%. In order that non-ferrous metal values shall not be removed from the bath, the oxidizing potential of the slag is reduced (e.g. by cutting down the oxidizing gas flow or the O 2 content thereof) when the Fe content of the bath is below 5%. If the original Fe content of the sulphide melt is above 10%, it may be reduced by direct surface blowing of the bath, with or without a slag with a free oxygen containing gas to below 10%. The process may be effected in a rotary furnace at a temperature of at least 1250‹ C. (preferably at least 1300‹ C.) which may be maintained by an auxiliary burner.
