Abstract

1282625 Removing tin from ores as sulphide BOLIDEN AB 22 Aug 1969 [2 Sept 1968] 41925/69 Heading C1A The tin content of an ore (which bears iron sulphide or is mixed with iron sulphide in finely divided form) is volatilized in a furnace into which the ore is introduced and is suspended therein in a gas stream which consists of oxygen, the gas stream being introduced at such quantities and at such concentration that the partial pressure of oxygen in the resulting roaster gas is defined by a pair of curves (Fig. 1, not shown) relating partial pressure to temperature whereafter the roasted ore is separated from the roaster gas at such a temperature that the tin compounds exist in gas form. The partial pressure of oxygen may vary from 10<SP>-15</SP> to 10<SP>-5</SP> atms. at temperatures of 700-1100‹ C. Thus tin is separated as SnS, the FeS is converted to e.g. magnetite, and any elemental sulphur in the gas stream after separation of solid material therefrom (e.g. in a hot cyclone) may be oxidized to SO 2 which may be further converted to H 2 SO 4 . The SnS is removed from the roaster gas by e.g. cooling and washing with water in a washing tower. The furnace used may be a fluidizing furnace; and oxidic iron material may also be introduced to the furnace.
