Abstract
Cobalt arsenical sulphide ores containing iron are treated to produce a solution containing most of the cobalt and having a ratio cobalt:iron of at least 4:1 by weight; the process comprising treating the material to form a matte containing not more than 3 per cent of arsenic preferably in an electric furnace at a temperature high enough to vaporize the arsenic and arsenic sulphides, crushing the matte until at least 80 per cent of it is minus 200 mesh and then subjecting it to an oxidizing roast to eliminate most of the sulphur, sulphating the roasted material and then subjecting it to a second roast in the presence of air between 575 DEG C. and 650 DEG C. until a solution obtained by leaching the roasted material with water has a ratio of cobalt:iron of at least 4:1. Roasted matte may be recycled by adding it to the ores supplied to the electric furnace, and the treatment of an ore concentrate containing also silver, nickel, and copper to produce a solution containing their sulphates is described. U.S.A. Specification 1,590,525 is referred to.ALSO:Cobalt arsenical sulphide ores containing iron are treated to produce a solution containing most of the cobalt and having a ratio cobalt: iron of at least 4:1 by weight; the process comprises treating the material to form a matte containing not more than 3 per cent of arsenic, preferably in an electric furnace at a temperature high enough to vaporise the arsenic and arsenical sulphides, crushing the matte until at least 80 per cent of it is minus 200 mesh and then subjecting it to an oxidising roast to eliminate most of the sulphur, sulphating the roasted material and then subjecting it to a second roast in the presence of air between 575 DEG C. and 650 DEG C. until a solution obtained by leaching the roasted material with water has a ratio cobalt: iron of at least 4:1.
