Abstract

414. Jumau, L. March 20, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Copper, obtaining.-A solution containing copper, preferably an ammoniacal solution, is treated with sulphurous acid or a sulphite, such as normal or acid ammonium sulphite; cuprous sulphite or cuproso-cupric sulphite, or a double ammonium salt, is precipitated, separated, and treated with an acid, such as sulphuric acid, that will only form a cupric salt ; copper is precipitated, separated from the sulphate solution, and is refined by ordinary metallurgical or electrolytic methods. The precipitated copper may be compressed into suitable forms, or on to conducting - supports of lead, carbon, copper, &c. and used as anode in a refining-bath. It is stated that this method of refining copper may be applied to any precipitated copper, such as that obtained by treating a copper salt solution with iron. Alternatively, the anodes are made from the cuprous sulphite or a mixture of the cuprous sulphite and the precipitated copper. The sulphurous acid used in the process may be conveniently obtained by roasting copper ore.
