Abstract

26,138. Mackay, H. S. Nov. 14. Sulphatizing. -In a cyclic process for electrolytically extracting a metal such as copper from a low grade ore, roasting of the ore is regulated so that only the desired metal is obtained as a soluble sulphate, and a weak acid lixiviant is used, to minimize contamination of the solution. The ore preferably contains one part of sulphur to 2-4 parts of copper; if required, sulphur may be added as such in the form of an ore or compound. Roasting is effected first at 444À5-460‹, and then at 500- 600‹ C. Whenthe spent electrolyte, which is used as lixiviant, becomes too rich or too poor in sulphuric acid and sulphates, the temperature of roasting is increased or decreased respectively. The lixiviant may contain 2 per cent of sulphuric acid and 2 per cent of copper as sulphate. The roasted ore is discharged into a cooling receptacle 4, and thence taken by a belt 6 to the lixiviating tank.
